Sidewall planers

A sidewall planer removes plastic and other material above the steel edge so that the file or diamond stone can reach the steel at the correct angle. The tool is used primarily during the initial setup and when the sidewall starts to get in the way again.

When is a sidewall planer needed?

If the file contacts the plastic before it makes full contact with the steel edge, the sharpening becomes uneven. In that case, the sidewall needs to be carefully trimmed back.

Choose cutter and setting

• Round cutters are common for plastic and softer sidewall materials.
• Square cutters can provide more pronounced material removal on certain constructions.
• Adjustable depth and support make it easier to take small, controlled shavings.

Remove as little as possible

Work calmly and check often. The goal is only to create clear access for the edge tool, not to reshape the entire side of the ski.
