Alpine skis can be treated with glide wax at several levels. A liquid glide wax is the quickest option, while hot wax provides more durable protection and a better base treatment. The guide is based exclusively on fluoro-free products.

Solid glide wax is melted in with a waxing iron, allowed to cool, then scraped and brushed out. This method provides a durable result and helps protect the base from drying out.
Build up a clean and even glide layer, brush out the structure, and if necessary complement with a fluoro-free race product or topping according to the manufacturer's instructions.
For quick waxing, only a few items are needed. For hot waxing, a few more tools are required, but the same basic equipment can be used for many seasons.
Choose liquid glide wax for quick application or solid glide wax for hot waxing. Always follow the temperature range on the packaging.
A proper waxing iron maintains a more even temperature than a household iron. Set the iron according to the recommendation on the wax packaging.
A straight, sharp plastic scraper makes the job easier and reduces the need for heavy pressure. It’s also good to have a small scraper or groove scraper for the steel edges.

The ski must be held securely when you use an iron and scraper. A good ski vice makes the job both safer and more even.

This is the simplest method for family skiing and ongoing maintenance. Exact drying time and finishing treatment vary between products, so always check the instructions on the bottle.
Bring the skis indoors, wipe off the snow, and let the base become completely dry. Cold or damp skis make it harder to achieve an even result.
Brush a few strokes from tip to tail and wipe away loose dust and dirt. If the base is clearly dirty, it should be cleaned thoroughly before applying new wax.
Shake the product if indicated on the packaging. Apply the wax over the entire base using the bottle's sponge, felt, or other recommended applicator. More wax does not automatically give better glide.
Let the product cure for the time specified by the manufacturer. Do not place the skis against each other while the surface is still wet or tacky.
Finish with a nylon brush, polishing brush, fleece, or cloth according to the product instructions. Work from tip to tail until the surface feels dry, even, and clean.
Work with a thin layer and keep the iron in constant motion. The goal is to distribute the wax evenly without heating the base more than necessary.
The ski should be stable and approximately level. Fold in or secure the ski brakes so they are not in the way.
Brush in the skiing direction and wipe clean. If the base is very dirty, use glide wax cleaner according to the product instructions and let the ski dry completely.
Use the temperature stated on the wax packaging. The iron should melt the wax without heavy smoke development. If the wax starts to smoke, the temperature is too high.
Drip or crayon the wax over the entire base. A thin continuous layer is sufficient and creates less waste than covering the ski with thick lines.
Move the iron in a smooth, continuous motion along the entire ski. Never stop in the same spot. Make another pass only if the wax has not been distributed evenly.
Wait at least about 10 minutes, and preferably longer for a more thorough treatment. Do not scrape while the wax and base are still warm.
Carefully run the corner of the scraper or a dedicated groove scraper along the edges. This reduces the risk of the scraper catching when you continue across the base.
Use a sharp plastic scraper with moderate pressure. Continue until visible excess is gone and the ski's structure begins to appear.
Start with a steel or bronze brush according to the wax system's recommendation. Continue with horsehair if needed and finish with nylon. Wipe away wax dust with a fiber cloth.

A sharp scraper requires less force and follows the base better. Pull from tip to tail and keep the scraper slightly angled.

The fine nylon brush polishes the surface and removes the last loose particles. Then wipe clean with fiberlene.

There is no exact interval that suits everyone. Snow type, number of ski days, base quality, and how hard you ski all affect the need.
A light gray or rough surface, often most visible near the steel edges, is a sign that the ski needs to be cleaned and hot waxed.
Poor glide on flat sections or a feeling that the snow is dragging can be caused by the wrong wax, a dirty base, or too much wax left in the structure.
Wax before a longer ski week and check the skis afterwards. Apply a protective layer before longer-term storage.
FIS has a complete fluorine ban. For racing, both products, skis, and tools therefore need to be free from old fluorine residues. Clean and methodical base work is more important than many layers.

Let the ski cool to room temperature, at least around 10 minutes and preferably longer for a more thorough treatment. Do not scrape a warm base.
It is not recommended. A waxing iron has a plate and temperature control adapted for ski wax and provides a more even and safer result. A household iron may also have steam holes that collect wax.
Yes. Excessively high temperature or an iron left in the same spot can overheat and damage the base. Follow the wax temperature recommendation and keep the iron moving at all times.
No, a good combination or metal brush and a nylon brush will go a long way for regular waxing. More brushes give you better control when working with different waxes and want to optimize the result.
Check the product labeling and the manufacturer’s current information. Older products with designations such as HF, LF or other fluorine indications should not be used in competition settings and should be kept away from clean tools.
