What is the difference between base binder and base preparation? Why should almost all glide wax be scraped off, and what exactly is meant by structure?

Base

Även: Ski base, base

The plastic surface on the underside of the ski that meets the snow. On cross-country skis, the underside consists of glide zones and, on classic skis, a grip zone or skin strip. The condition, structure, and cleanliness of the base affect how the ski glides and how the wax adheres.

A shiny base is not automatically a fast base. After glide waxing, the structure should be free from visible excess.

Base repair

Även: P-tex, repair material

Repair of scratches or gouges in the base using a material that is melted or pressed into the damage and then leveled. Superficial damage can often be repaired at home, while deep damage near the core or steel edge should be assessed by a workshop.

The repair material should restore the surface - not build up a bump that later has to be scraped down aggressively.

Brush

Även: Ski brush, wax brush

Tool used to clean the base, expose the structure after scraping, or polish the finished surface. Steel and bronze work deeper into the structure, horsehair removes finer residue, and nylon is often used for the final finish.

The brush does not replace the scraper. After hard glide wax, the excess must first be scraped off with a sharp plexi scraper.

Hardwax

Även: Hardwax, kick wax

Solid grip wax in a tin, normally used in new, fine-grained, or relatively dry snow. It is applied in several thin layers in the grip zone and smoothed with cork between the layers.

The temperature range is a starting point. Snow type, precipitation, and how glazed the track is can be at least as important.

Hard glide wax

Även: Block wax, paraffin, hard wax

Glide wax in solid form that is usually ironed in with a waxing iron. Once the wax has cooled, the excess is scraped off and the base is brushed until the structure is clean and clearly visible.

Hard glide wax normally provides better durability than a quick liquid treatment, but requires more tools and more work.

Fiberlene

Även: Fiber paper, wax paper

Low-lint disposable paper used to apply cleaning agents, wipe bases, and lift off dissolved hardwax or klister. Clean pieces reduce the risk of moving dirt between the ski's different zones.

Use separate cloths for glide, grip, and skin. A piece that has come into contact with klister should not go back onto the glide surface.

Fibertex

Även: Abrasive pad, non-woven abrasive

Abrasive cloth for fine treatment of the base, for example on some new or freshly stone-ground skis with noticeable micro-hairs. Different grades work with different aggressiveness and should be used thoughtfully in the ski's longitudinal direction.

Fibertex is not a mandatory part of every wax job and should not be used on skin strips.

Äldre begreppHistoriskt

Fluoro wax

Även: Cera F, HF, LF, fluoro powder, fluorocarbon wax

Older glide waxes and topping products that contained fluorine. Names such as Cera F, HF, LF, and fluoro powder still appear in old manuals and wax boxes, but fluorinated wax and tuning products containing fluorine are prohibited by FIS in all disciplines and at all levels.

The term is included so that older instructions can be understood - not as a recommendation. Older skis and tools may need to be cleaned before competition.

Glidvalla

Liquid glide wax

Även: Liquid wax, liquid glide

Glide wax applied in a thin liquid layer and allowed to dry before polishing or brushing according to the product instructions. It is quick and practical for training, travel, and maintenance between hot waxings.

Liquid glide wax is not the same thing as glide wax cleaner. One leaves a glide layer; the other dissolves dirt and residue.

Grip wax

Umbrella term for wax that creates grip under classic cross-country skis. Hardwax is used mainly in finer snow, and klister in transformed, coarse, icy, or wet snow. Skin also provides grip, but it is a mechanical skin insert and not a grip wax.

Good grip depends both on choosing the right product and on the ski camber and grip zone matching the skier.

Grip zone

The part under a classic ski where hardwax or klister is applied. The length of the zone is affected by the ski camber, the skier’s weight, technique, and the type of grip wax used.

Klister is often applied in a slightly shorter zone than hardwax because it builds up more under the ski.

Glidvalla

Glide wax

Även: Glider, glide wax

Wax applied to the ski’s glide zones to reduce friction, optimize contact with the snow, and protect the base. Solid, liquid, and gel-based glide wax are different application forms of the same basic function.

After solid glide wax, almost all visible wax should be removed. It is the clean structure and the treated base surface that should meet the snow.

Glide zone

The part of the ski that should glide against the snow. On waxable classic skis there are glide zones in front of and behind the grip zone, on skin skis in front of and behind the skin strip, and on skate skis across the entire base.

Wax ridges from hardwax and klister do not normally belong on the glide zones.

Base klister

A thin and durable first klister layer that anchors the day’s klister in the grip zone. It can be heated or smoothed in depending on the product and should normally be allowed to dry or cool before the next layer is applied.

The base klister should be thin. The thickness and grip are built with the day’s klister, not with a large sticky base layer.

Base preparation

The first thorough treatment of new or newly stone-ground glide surfaces. It may include inspection, cleaning, suitable base or saturation wax, cooling, scraping, and brushing.

Base preparation is a work process. Base wax is a product or a layer - so the terms do not mean the same thing.

Base structure

The ski’s permanent structure created at the factory or in the workshop by stone grinding. The base structure is the starting point for the base’s contact with the snow and may be fine, medium-coarse, or coarse for different conditions.

A hand-cut rill complements the base structure. It does not replace a worn-out or unsuitable permanent structure.

Base wax

A thin first layer in the normal grip zone that improves the hardwax’s adhesion and durability. The base wax can be corked in or heated in depending on the product and level of ambition.

In glide contexts, similar terms are sometimes used for base prep. Always check whether the product is intended for the grip zone or the glide zones.

Hand structure

Även: Manual structure, hand rill

A structure applied manually with a rilling tool to fine-tune the ski’s contact with the snow. Rolling tools normally press in a more temporary structure, while cutting tools alter the base more permanently.

Hand structure is chosen based on the snow, the amount of water, and the stone grind. Coarser is not automatically faster.

Base bevel

The small angle ground between the ski base plane and the steel edge. The base bevel means the edge does not engage fully immediately when the ski lies flat, which affects how easily the ski turns and how aggressive the edge feels.

Small changes are clearly noticeable. Check the recommended angle before working on the base edge.

Icing

When snow crystals stick to a grip wax that is too soft or to klister and begin building up a layer of snow under the ski. The risk is especially high in falling or damp fresh snow around zero degrees.

Icing is harder to fix than slight kick slip. Therefore, start a bit harder and fine-tune with thin layers.

Edge angle

The angle of the side of the steel edge relative to the ski base. A more aggressive angle can provide stronger edge grip but requires the right tools, precision, and consideration of the ski’s intended use.

Side edge angle and base bevel are two different settings that together shape how the edge behaves.

Klister

Soft and sticky grip wax for transformed, coarse-grained, icy, or water-rich snow where regular hard wax often wears off or does not provide enough grip. Klister is applied thinly and smoothed into a continuous surface.

Klister is chosen primarily based on the shape of the snow crystals and the water content - not solely on air temperature.

Klister zone

The part of the classic ski’s grip zone where klister is applied. Because klister builds more and deforms more easily than hard wax, a shorter and more controlled zone is often used.

Start inside the outer limits of the hard wax zone and extend carefully under the foot if the ski still has kick slip.

Snö och före

Artificial snow

Även: Machine-made snow, artificial snow, man-made snow

Snow produced with a snow gun. The crystals are often denser, coarser, and more abrasive than fresh natural snow, especially when the track has been packed and skied a lot.

Artificial snow may require more durable grip wax, a harder glide base wax, and a structure that matches how transformed and damp the snow has become.

Cork

Även: Wax cork, synthetic cork

Block of natural cork or synthetic material used to smooth hard wax and certain other products into thin, continuous layers. The friction from corking helps the wax spread over the grip zone.

It is a good idea to use separate corks for different work steps. A cork with klister or dirt residue can ruin a clean layer.

Microhairs

Även: Microfibers, micro hairs

Very fine plastic fibers that can stand up from the base after manufacturing or stone grinding. They can increase friction and retain wax residue if they are not treated in a controlled manner.

Microhairs should not be chased aggressively on every ski. The method should be adapted to the stone grind, base material, and how pronounced the problem actually is.

Glidvalla

Saturation

Även: Base saturation, saturation

A common term for giving the glide surfaces an even and well-prepared starting point through suitable wax, controlled heat, cooling, scraping, and brushing. It is not about filling the base with unlimited amounts of paraffin.

A simple base preparation done carefully is better than many layers that are heated, cooled, and brushed carelessly.
This gives the base a good start

Zero conditions

Conditions around the freezing point where small changes in temperature, precipitation, and humidity can quickly change the snow. Grip wax often needs to be right on the boundary between sufficient grip and icing.

Falling fresh snow, a glazed track, and coarse wet snow around zero are three different problems and may require completely different solutions.

Fresh snow

Även: Freshly fallen snow, new snow

Fresh snow with relatively sharp and distinct crystals. It is often sensitive to grip wax that is too soft and to overly coarse structure, especially when it falls damp around zero degrees.

Fresh snow describes the age and crystal shape of the snow - not a specific temperature.

Transformed snow

Även: Old snow, transformed snow

Snow whose crystals have rounded, compacted, melted, or refrozen. It often becomes coarser and more abrasive than fresh snow and can develop free water when the temperature rises.

Transformed snow makes klister, durable glide layers, and more pronounced structure more relevant than in cold fresh snow.

Plexi scraper

Även: Plastic scraper, plastic scraper

Rigid plastic tool used to scrape off excess hard glide wax after cooling. A sharp edge requires less pressure and gives better control than a rounded or dull scraper.

Clean the guide grooves and edges first. Then a protective wax layer is still left on the glide surface if the tool slips.

Rill

Även: Rilling, structure roller, filing

Manually added structure or the tool that creates it. A straight, diagonal, or V-shaped rill can change how water and snow leave the contact surface and is used as fine-tuning on top of the ski's stone grind.

Rolling rill is normally more forgiving and temporary. Cutting tools require greater experience because they alter the base more permanently.

Roto brush

Även: Rotating brush, roto brush

Cylindrical brush mounted on a drive machine to make cleaning, opening the structure, or polishing more efficient. Different materials have the same main roles as hand brushes, but the work goes faster and requires better control.

Use light pressure, keep the brush moving, and follow the recommended RPM and rotation direction. Safety glasses and a protective guard are important.

Roughening

Light roughening of a standard grip zone to give base binder or klister better mechanical adhesion. The work is done lengthwise along the ski and after the glide zones have been fully prepared.

Roughening applies to waxable grip zones. Sandpaper must not be used on the skin strip.

Scraping

The step in which excess wax is removed with a scraper. On glide zones, ironed-in glide wax is scraped after it has cooled, while hardwax and klister are often removed mechanically before using wax remover.

The goal is to remove wax sitting on top of the base and open up the structure - not to cut into the base itself.

Skin

Även: Climbing skin, skin strip, mohair

Integrated strip of mohair, synthetic fiber or a blend that provides mechanical grip on classic skis. The glide zones in front of and behind the strip are waxed as usual, but the skin itself is cleaned with a dedicated skin product.

Keep waxing irons, wax drips, sandpaper and regular glide waxes away from the skin strip.

Storage wax

Även: Transport wax, storage wax, storage wax

A layer of glide wax left unscraped on the glide zones during storage or transport. The layer protects the base from dust, dirt and drying out and is only removed when the ski is to be used again.

Hardwax and klister, however, should be removed before summer storage. The protective layer belongs only on the glide zones.

Snow temperature

Även: Snow temperature

The temperature in the snow itself, measured a little way down in the track or snowpack. It often changes more slowly than the air temperature and can therefore give a more stable indication of which temperature range a glide wax is intended for.

Check the product label. Some series indicate air temperature, others snow temperature, and some distinguish between new and old snow.

Camber

The ski’s flex and stiffness that determine how pressure is distributed against the snow. On a classic ski, the grip zone should lift sufficiently during glide but be pressed down when the skier loads the ski for kick.

When the camber is wrong for the skier, adding more or less wax can only hide the problem temporarily.

Structure

The pattern of fine and coarse grooves in the base that affects the contact surface against the snow and how water is transported away. Stone grinding and hand structure work together, but have different durability and function.

Finer structure is often used in drier and colder snow, coarser in wetter conditions - but the ski pair and stone grind must always be taken into account.

Center groove

Även: Groove in the base, center groove

The lengthwise groove in the ski base that helps the ski track straight. After hot waxing, the center groove is cleaned out before the glide zones so that wax does not remain and cause drag or uneven tracking.

Use a dedicated groove scraper with controlled pressure and work from tip to tail.

Steel edge

Metal edge along alpine skis, snowboards and some touring or backcountry skis. It is sharpened to provide grip on hard surfaces and is affected by both the side-edge angle and the base bevel.

Files shape the edge, while diamond stones are mainly used to refine and maintain it.

Topping

Även: Finisher, top layer

A thin final glide layer for race preparation, such as liquid wax, gel, spray or another specialist product. The topping is applied to a ski where the base, main wax, scraping, brushing and any structure have already been completed.

An extra layer is only worthwhile when it has a clear purpose and has been tested. More products do not automatically give better glide.

Pressure zone

The parts of the ski that carry the most load against the snow during glide. The pressure zones are affected by camber, skier and speed, and are sometimes used when fine-tuning structure or comparing ski pairs.

Pressure zone is not the same as the entire glide zone. The load can differ clearly along the same ski.

Covered klister

A thin, fully cooled klister layer that is covered with several thin layers of hard wax. The method can combine the durability of a klister base with a drier surface that reduces the risk of icing in mixed conditions.

The klister must be cold before the hard wax is applied. Corking too hard can pull the klister up through the top layer.

Waxing iron

Temperature-controlled iron with a smooth plate that melts and spreads solid glide wax or certain base waxes. The correct setting is determined by the product being used, and the iron should be kept moving evenly over the base.

The wax should melt without smoking. A regular steam iron has the wrong plate and poorer control for waxing.

Wax cushion

An everyday term for the entire package of thin grip wax layers in the grip zone. A wax cushion can be built with a durable base, harder intermediate layers and a smaller amount of softer wax where the most grip is needed.

Thin layers are easier to adjust than one thick layer. Around zero, a harder cushion with a thin soft top layer can reduce the risk of icing.

Waxing profile

Även: Ski holder, waxing bench, ski vise

Support that holds the ski stable during waxing, scraping and brushing. A full-length profile follows the shape of the ski, while compact waxing benches and ski clamps hold the ski at fewer points.

Stability is more important than the profile looking advanced. The ski should not move when you scrape or brush.

Hot scraping

Även: Hot scraping, hot scraping

A deeper cleaning method where a soft glide wax is ironed in and scraped off while it is still warm or lukewarm. Dirt and old paraffin come out of the base structure with the wax.

Hot scraping is not needed after every outing. Start with brushing or glide wax cleaner and use the deeper method when the base really requires it.

Fästzonen är området för burkvalla eller klister på en klassisk skida. Tryckzonerna är de delar som bär mest last mot snön under glid och kan ligga inom olika delar av glidytan.

Äldre instruktioner

Fluororden ska gå att förstå - men inte styra dagens produktval

Cera F, HF, LF och fluorpulver var etablerade namn i äldre tävlingsvallning. Därför finns de kvar som sökord i ordlistan och kan dyka upp i filmer, anteckningsböcker och gamla vallalådor.

Fluorinerad skidvalla och tuningprodukter med fluor är förbjudna inom FIS på alla discipliner och nivåer. Har skidor eller verktyg en äldre fluorhistorik bör de hållas åtskilda och rengöras enligt en genomtänkt metod.

Cera FÄldre namn för fluorbaserade toppingprodukter, ofta i pulverform.
HF och LFÄldre förkortningar för glidvallor med hög respektive låg fluorhalt.
FluorpulverHistorisk tävlingstopping som inte hör hemma i dagens fluorfria system.

Glidvalla används på skidans glidytor för att minska friktionen mot snön. Fästvalla används i fästzonen på klassiska skidor för att ge grepp i frånskjutet. På skateskidor finns ingen fästzon.
