Waxing around zero
Conditions around the freezing point are tricky because small temperature changes can quickly turn the snow from dry to moist, glazed, or icy. Here you’ll find grip wax, klister, and accessories to fine-tune grip.
Assess the snow - not just the thermometer
New moist snow, old coarse snow, and man-made snow may require completely different waxes at the same temperature. Look at the crystals, the sheen of the track, and how the snow sticks to the ski.
Build flexible grip
- Use a durable base layer.
- Apply several thin layers instead of one thick one.
- Cover klister with grip wax when you need a drier surface.
- Bring alternatives for quick adjustment when the forecast is uncertain.
Test before the start
Test both grip and glide, and adjust little by little. If snow is icing onto the ski, the surface is often too warm or too sticky.
