Rilling tools and structure

Rilling tools press a temporary structure into the ski base to manage water and reduce suction. The right rill can improve glide, especially in damp, wet, and transformed snow.

Structure by conditions

Finer and straighter patterns are often used in colder and drier conditions, while coarser or crossed structures can help channel away more water in warmer snow.

Rill complements the base structure

Rilling does not replace a good stone-ground base structure. It is used as an adjustment on top of the base’s existing pattern and can often be reset through rewaxing and brushing.

Work methodically

• Clean and prepare the base before rilling.
• Use even pressure and work from tip to tail.
• Start carefully and test before combining multiple patterns.
• Document the rill, pressure, and conditions when you find a setup that works.
