Wax cross-country skis - Basic preparation for new cross-country skis

If you have bought a new ski, you can follow these steps.

New ski:

If it is the first time you are waxing your new skis, you should do a basic preparation to saturate the base.

    1. Scrape off the protective paraffin that may have been applied at the factory (see the video below). Then make a few strokes with a brass, fine steel brush, or fibertex on the base to remove any microhairs and open up the base. Work from front to back.
    2. When you do the basic paraffining/saturation for a pair of classic skis, no preparation should be done on the ski's grip zone. See the following instructional video that applies to points 3, 4, and 5.

  1. Melt in a soft glider or a cleaning & saturation paraffin with the waxing iron on low heat (max 120°C). Don’t skimp!
  2. Scrape everything off while the glider is lukewarm with a plastic or acrylic scraper (this is to clean the base). Then brush out the base with a nylon brush.
  3. Repeat steps 3 and 4, 3-4 times.
  4. Melt in a soft glider, type purple or blue. Let cool indoors for about 15 minutes, scrape off and brush out with a nylon brush.
  5. Melt in a hard glider, type green or black, preferably graphite. Let cool indoors for about 15 minutes, scrape off and brush out with a nylon brush.
  6. If you are not going to apply glide wax and ski immediately after this basic paraffining, leave the last layer unscraped until you later wax and go skiing.
