View full detailsThis is how topping works
Topping is an extra finish that is applied on top of your glide wax to provide the best possible speed and feel on the track or slope. It is often used in competitions where every second counts, but it also works for those who want to give their skis an extra boost even during training.
Why use topping?
- Provides extra water and dirt repellency.
- Improves glide compared to just base wax.
- Can be adapted to snow type and temperature.
Different forms of topping
- Powder – worked in with a waxing iron, very durable and effective.
- Liquid topping – easy to apply, quick-drying, and convenient on the competition day.
- Block – rubbed on the surface and brushed up, good for quick finish.
How to apply topping
- Apply your base wax (solid or liquid) and brush out the base.
- Apply the topping according to instructions for the chosen type (powder, liquid, or block).
- Brush thoroughly until the surface is shiny and free of residues.
Advantages and limitations
Topping provides the best effect in competition and shorter sessions. For longer distances, the durability is not always as high as with solid glide waxes, but the combination still provides superior glide during large parts of the race.
FAQ – Common questions about topping
Do I need topping for training?
No, it mainly makes a difference in competition, but it can be fun to try even during training.
Which topping should I choose?
Powder offers the best durability, block is the easiest, and liquid is the most practical on competition day.
Can I use topping without base wax?
No, topping is always a complement on top of a glide wax to provide extra effect.
Is topping allowed in fluorine-free competition?
Yes, today's toppings are completely fluorine-free and developed to work in all contexts.
