To sharpen your steel edges, you need both files and whetstones. A file is initially used to set the correct angle on the edge, and then it is used to repair any damage that occurs. For maintenance and continued sharpening, you use whetstones. Diamond whetstones make the edge very sharp while not grinding down the material too much. Read more about sharpening steel edges here.
