Poles are more than just support – they are a central part of the technique in skiing. The right pole helps you get more power in each push-off, better balance, and a more efficient ride. Whether you are cross-country skiing or alpine skiing, the choice of poles is important for both feeling and performance.
Cross-country poles
- Longer and lighter than alpine poles.
- Designed to provide maximum push-off in the track.
- Available in different materials – from aluminum to advanced carbon fiber.
- Straps and handles adapted for many hours of use.
How to choose cross-country poles:
A simple rule is that classic poles should be about 35 cm shorter than body height and skating poles about 22.5 cm shorter.
Alpine poles
- Shorter and sturdier, built for balance and steering.
- Stronger shafts and baskets to withstand high speeds and heavy loads.
- Adapted for different disciplines – from slalom to freeriding.
How to choose alpine poles:
Stand straight with your arms at your sides. Lift your forearm so that the elbow is at a 90° angle. Measure the distance from the floor to your hand – that's the pole length you should choose.
FAQ – Common questions about poles
How do I know what pole length I should have?
For classic cross-country skis: body height minus 35 cm. For skate: body height minus 22.5 cm. For alpine: use the 90° method.
Is carbon fiber better than aluminum?
Carbon fiber is lighter and provides a better feel but can be more fragile. Aluminum is durable and often cheaper.
Can I use the same poles for cross-country and alpine?
No, they are designed for completely different disciplines. Cross-country poles are longer and lighter, while alpine poles are shorter and sturdier.
Do I need to change baskets?
Yes, on cross-country poles, the baskets can be changed depending on snow conditions (small for hard tracks, larger for loose snow).
