You put retaining wall on the zone called span. The span should extend from the heel and 50-70 cm forward. This span must be measured exactly for you, if you want to get it really good, i.e. really good sliding while getting a grip. If it's just a little too far, the brake "is on" when you go. If it is too short, or the span is too tight, the "brake" does not work. That means you don't get a hold when you kick away. You usually measure out three vallazones on the ski. One for cold jars, one for hot jars and one for glue. If you only have two markings, take the longer one for can and the shorter one for glue.
