Can wax is used on days when there is fresh snow, or on older snow that has not melted and transformed into coarse snow crystals.
Follow the temperature recommendation on the can, and it usually works well. If you experience snow sticking under the ski, you have chosen a wax that is too warm. If there is poor grip, you have waxed with a wax that is too cold or with too few layers. Always apply several thin layers and cork out properly. Remember that a ski is made for 4 to 7 thin layers of grip wax and that each layer must be corked out with a synthetic cork.
A simple starter kit that we recommend to handle all winter temperatures is a Green, Blue & Violet can of grip wax.
