The base wax for better grip on cross-country skis is applied very thinly, and it is preferably warmed in with an iron to make it even and thin. This is used so that other can wax or klister sticks better to the ski. Thus, the base grip wax adheres better to the ski, and then other wax adheres better to this base wax than it would to the ski. Simply better durability for the grip wax!
