Product description
Swix World Cup True Bar is a straightedge that helps you check whether the ski base is flat before working on the steel edges. Checking the base first gives you a better starting point for setting the correct edge angles and preparing the ski carefully.
The precision measuring surface lets you detect uneven areas that are difficult to judge by eye. A useful tool for checking new skis, assessing the result after base grinding and preparing skis for further edge work.
How to use True Bar
- Make sure the base is clean, dry and free from excess wax. Wipe the straightedge's measuring surface clean too.
- Place the measuring surface across the base and let the straightedge rest lightly on the ski.
- Point the ski towards a light source, or place a lamp behind the straightedge, and look for gaps of light between the measuring surface and base.
- Repeat the check at several points along the ski to assess the condition of the entire base.
What does the check show?
- Flat base: the straightedge rests evenly across the base surface.
- Concave base: a clear light gap under the middle of the straightedge may indicate that the base is lower in the centre than at the edges.
- Convex base: the straightedge rests on the centre and can rock from side to side, which may indicate that the base is higher in the middle.
Also allow for the steel edge's intentional base bevel. This can leave a small light gap right at the steel edge even when the base itself is flat.
A good first step in edge preparation
The check helps you decide whether the ski is ready for edge work or whether the base needs attention first. Once base flatness is checked, you can move on to the right file guide and stone for your intended preparation.
